Calculate the Coefficient of Variation (CV%) from mean and standard deviation.

Enter the arithmetic mean of your dataset.
Enter the standard deviation of your dataset.

CV Formula SD ÷ Mean × 100

What is CV%?

The Coefficient of Variation (CV) is a statistical measure used to describe the relative variability of a dataset. It expresses the standard deviation as a percentage of the mean.

CV% = (Standard Deviation ÷ Mean) × 100

Example

If the mean is 50 and the standard deviation is 5:

CV% = (5 ÷ 50) × 100 = 10%

General Interpretation

CV% General Interpretation
< 10% Low relative variability
10–20% Moderate variability
20–30% High variability
> 30% Very high variability
Important: CV interpretation depends on the scientific field and dataset. The thresholds above are general guidelines rather than universal statistical rules. CV is most meaningful when the mean is positive and meaningfully different from zero.
